Effective Treatments Of Middle Back Pain

Most complaints of chronic back pain usually refer to lower back pain, however back pain can also plague people for many of the same reasons that lower back pain does. Middle back pain is defined as pain occurring in the area of the 12 vertebrae in the middle of the spine. Fortunately the treatments for this type of back pain are simple and usually eliminate the pain in a short period of time. The purpose of this article is to discuss the most common effective treatments suggested by doctors for the treatment of middle back pain.

Conservative Treatments For Middle Back Pain

The most common cause of middle back pain is overuse leading to the straining of the muscles in the middle of the back. Doctors commonly suggest conservative treatments, such as rest, back braces or customized physical therapy exercises. Surgery is recommended in less than 10% of the cases of middle back pain. Chiropractic therapy is suggested in cases of middle back pain that do not respond to the more conservative methods commonly practiced.

Rest For Middle Back Pain

For the most common cause of middle back pain – sprains- the best treatment is rest. Your physician will most likely request that you spend the majority of your time lying on a flat hard surface, like a floor or a very firm mattress. Rest will allow any damage in the muscle or ligament tissue to heal, which will lessen the pain in the middle back area. While this is not recommended for long term treatment, rest can help eliminate the minor pain or be a great first step in healing a more serious middle back problem.

Back Braces For Middle Back Pain

Poor posture can lead to pain in the middle back area. Consistently leaning forward or slouching back can put uneven pressure on the muscles in the back which will eventually lead to a constant or reoccurring pain in your back, middle or lower. If the problem is reoccurring, your doctor may suggest that you wear a back brace until the muscles in your back get a chance to heal.

Physical Therapy For Middle Back Pain

Physical therapy is often coupled with a back brace for the treatment of chronic middle back pain. The simple exercises that your physical therapist will teach you will help strengthen the muscle in your back and reduce the instances of pain. Physical therapy exercises also increase your flexibility through exercises and occasionally hot compress treatments. You regular doctor will be able to recommend a good physical therapist for you.
